Developing Cultural Competence

CultureWise Projects

Globe Project

The All Ireland Programme for Immigrant parents was a cross-border, inter-agency initiative aimed at immigrant parents and practitioners working with them throughout the island of Ireland.

The Globe Project aims to promote positive parenting through the provision of resource and practice tools which can be used by practitioners in organisations that work with immigrant parents.

Migrants have become an increasingly visible client group for both statutory and NGO sectors. They have particular needs which require tailored response. There is a growing wealth of experience of working with immigrant parents but little opportunity to collate the experiences and information – much of which is being carried out on a local level.

SECAD

SECAD is an integrated development company that has successfully delivered rural development and social inclusion programmes  and initiatives in the East Cork area on behalf of the European Union and the Irish Government through the National Development Plan.

“I found that having the space to discuss some of our specific difficulties when working with immigrant groups was very helpful, to listen to others and help each other gain understanding and find solutions and agreed on ways to change our methodologies or approaches.

A good deal of openness, self awareness and understanding is required to truly be willing to communicate and work in an effective way with people outside my own culture…

What we needed was very specific discussion and exploration of issues regarding various cultural communication including tips and pointers that may help us in our day to day work and we got down to this more in our second follow up session.”
